How Much Does Car Insurance Cost in Los Angeles?

There’s no single price for car insurance in Los Angeles. Under California’s Proposition 103, insurers must base your rate mainly on three things: your driving safety record, the miles you drive each year, and how many years you’ve been licensed. After that, carriers can weigh optional factors like where your car is kept, the vehicle you drive and the coverage you choose, and each company weighs them differently. That’s why the same Los Angeles driver can get very different quotes, and why comparing carriers pays off.

What moves your Los Angeles car insurance rate
FactorHow it affects Los Angeles drivers
Driving recordThe biggest factor under Prop 103. Tickets and at-fault accidents typically raise rates for three years or more.
Annual mileageLong freeway commutes across the Valley, Westside and downtown add up to high annual mileage.
Years licensedNewer drivers pay more; rates usually drop as you gain experience.
ZIP codeRates can shift from one neighborhood to the next. Westwood, Van Nuys and San Pedro are priced as different territories.
VehicleRepair costs, theft rates and safety ratings for your make and model.
Coverage & deductibleHigher limits cost more; a higher deductible lowers your premium.

About Los Angeles, California

Los Angeles is the largest city in California and the second largest in the country, spreading across more than 460 square miles from the San Fernando Valley to the Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro. It is home to Hollywood, Dodger Stadium, Griffith Observatory and LAX, one of the busiest airports in the world. Nearly four million people live here, and most of them get around by car.

Driving in Los Angeles: What to Know

49%Homes with 2+ carsCA: 63%

Driving in Los Angeles means freeways. The I-405 through the Sepulveda Pass, the I-5 through downtown and the US-101 through Hollywood are some of the most congested stretches of road in the country, and more time in stop-and-go traffic means more chances for fender benders. Street parking in dense neighborhoods like Koreatown and Hollywood also exposes cars to break-ins, hit-and-runs and catalytic converter theft, which is why so many Angelenos add comprehensive and uninsured motorist coverage on top of the state minimum.

Commuters in Los Angeles spend an average of 31 minutes getting to work, about the same as the California average of 29 minutes. About 61.4% of workers drive to work alone, while 6.7% take public transit and 17.3% work from home. 48.9% of households have two or more vehicles, below the state rate of 62.6%. Los Angeles police recorded 20,093 vehicle thefts in 2025, about 5.2 per 1,000 residents, above the statewide rate of 3.2. Comprehensive coverage is what pays if your car is stolen or broken into, so it’s worth keeping on any car you’d want to replace. If you work from home and drive less than you used to, tell us. Lower annual mileage can lower your rate.

Minimum Car Insurance Requirements in Los Angeles

Every driver in Los Angeles must carry at least California’s minimum liability insurance. The limits went up on January 1, 2025, to 30/60/15:

$30,000Bodily injury, per person
$60,000Bodily injury, per accident
$15,000Property damage, per accident

Liability pays for injuries and damage you cause to others, not for your own car. Insurers must also offer uninsured motorist coverage, which you can only decline in writing. Minimum limits can run out quickly in a serious crash, so ask us to quote higher limits side by side; the difference is often smaller than you’d expect.

Penalties for Driving Without Insurance in Los Angeles

California requires you to carry proof of insurance whenever you drive, and Los Angeles police and the CHP can ask for it at any traffic stop. Driving uninsured can cost far more than a policy:

  • First offense: a fine of $100–$200 plus penalty assessments that can multiply the total several times over.
  • Later offenses: $200–$500 plus assessments, and your vehicle may be impounded.
  • If you crash uninsured: the DMV can suspend your license for up to four years, and you’re personally on the hook for the damage.
  • Getting reinstated usually means filing an SR-22 and paying higher rates for years.

Los Angeles Car Insurance FAQ

Who has the cheapest car insurance in Los Angeles?

No single company is cheapest for everyone in Los Angeles. Each carrier weighs your driving record, mileage, experience, ZIP code and vehicle differently, so the cheapest option for your neighbor may not be the cheapest for you. As an independent broker, we compare multiple carriers at once to find the lowest price for your situation.

How much car insurance do I need in Los Angeles?

California requires at least $30,000 of bodily injury liability per person, $60,000 per accident and $15,000 of property damage liability (30/60/15). Those limits are low compared with the cost of a serious crash, so many Los Angeles drivers choose higher limits. If your car is financed or leased, your lender will also require comprehensive and collision coverage.

Why is car insurance more expensive in Los Angeles than in other California cities?

Insurers price by claims experience. Heavy freeway traffic, dense street parking and higher rates of theft and uninsured drivers mean more claims per driver in much of Los Angeles than in smaller cities. Comparing several carriers is the most reliable way to offset that, because each company weighs those risks differently.

Does where I park in Los Angeles change my quote?

It can. Carriers rate the address where your car is kept overnight, and a car in a locked garage is often cheaper to insure than one parked on the street. Tell us how your car is parked and we will make sure every carrier quotes it correctly.

Do California insurers use my credit score?

No. California does not allow auto insurers to use credit scores or credit-based insurance scores to set your rate, and gender can’t be used either. Your driving record, annual mileage and years of experience matter most.
