How Much Does Car Insurance Cost in San Diego County?
There’s no single price for car insurance in San Diego County. Under California’s Proposition 103, insurers must base your rate mainly on three things: your driving safety record, the miles you drive each year, and how many years you’ve been licensed. After that, carriers can weigh optional factors like where your car is kept, the vehicle you drive and the coverage you choose, and each company weighs them differently. That’s why the same San Diego County driver can get very different quotes, and why comparing carriers pays off.
Why San Diego County Drivers Compare Quotes With A1
A1 California Auto Insurance Quotes is an independent insurance broker. That means we don’t work for one insurance company. We work for you. When you ask for a quote, a licensed agent takes your driver and vehicle details once, runs them through several California carriers, and lays out the prices side by side so you can see exactly where the savings are for San Diego County drivers.
California is the only state we serve, so we know its rules, from the Prop 103 Good Driver Discount to the 30/60/15 liability minimums, and how carriers treat drivers across San Diego County. Whether you need basic liability to stay legal, full coverage for a financed car, or an SR-22 filing after a violation, we’ll find the options that fit and explain them in plain English.
Driving in San Diego County: What to Know
San Diego County commuters average 26 minutes each way, compared with 29 minutes statewide, and 67.6% drive to work alone. 64.4% of households keep two or more vehicles (state: 62.6%). Law enforcement across the county recorded 7,385 vehicle thefts in 2025, about 2.2 per 1,000 residents, below the statewide rate of 3.2. Rates can differ a lot from one ZIP code to the next inside the same county, which is why we quote your exact address rather than a county average.

Minimum Car Insurance Requirements in San Diego County
Every driver in San Diego County must carry at least California’s minimum liability insurance. The limits went up on January 1, 2025, to 30/60/15:
Liability pays for injuries and damage you cause to others, not for your own car. Insurers must also offer uninsured motorist coverage, which you can only decline in writing. Minimum limits can run out quickly in a serious crash, so ask us to quote higher limits side by side; the difference is often smaller than you’d expect.

Penalties for Driving Without Insurance in San Diego County
California requires you to carry proof of insurance whenever you drive, and the San Diego County Sheriff, local police and the CHP can ask for it at any traffic stop. Driving uninsured can cost far more than a policy:
- First offense: a fine of $100–$200 plus penalty assessments that can multiply the total several times over.
- Later offenses: $200–$500 plus assessments, and your vehicle may be impounded.
- If you crash uninsured: the DMV can suspend your license for up to four years, and you’re personally on the hook for the damage.
- Getting reinstated usually means filing an SR-22 and paying higher rates for years.
San Diego County Car Insurance FAQ
Who has the cheapest car insurance in San Diego County?
No single company is cheapest for everyone in San Diego County. Each carrier weighs your driving record, mileage, experience, ZIP code and vehicle differently, so the cheapest option for your neighbor may not be the cheapest for you. As an independent broker, we compare multiple carriers at once to find the lowest price for your situation.
How much car insurance do I need in San Diego County?
California requires at least $30,000 of bodily injury liability per person, $60,000 per accident and $15,000 of property damage liability (30/60/15). Those limits are low compared with the cost of a serious crash, so many San Diego County drivers choose higher limits. If your car is financed or leased, your lender will also require comprehensive and collision coverage.
Where are traffic tickets in San Diego County handled?
Traffic tickets in San Diego County go to the Superior Court of California, County of San Diego. Points on your driving record raise insurance rates for years, so ask the court whether traffic school is an option.
Is car theft common in San Diego County?
Law enforcement in San Diego County recorded 7,385 vehicle thefts in 2025, about 2.2 per 1,000 residents, below the California rate of 3.2. Comprehensive coverage is what pays if your car is stolen.
Do California insurers use my credit score?
No. California does not allow auto insurers to use credit scores or credit-based insurance scores to set your rate, and gender can’t be used either. Your driving record, annual mileage and years of experience matter most.
