Some carriers specialize in drivers that other companies avoid. If you’ve been turned down or quoted a sky-high price, the answer is usually to shop the carriers that focus on your situation, which is exactly what a broker does.
You need an SR-22
An SR-22 is a certificate your insurance company files with the California DMV to prove you carry at least the minimum required liability coverage. The DMV can require one after a DUI, driving without insurance, a license suspension or too many violation points, typically for three years. If your policy lapses while an SR-22 is required, the insurer must notify the DMV, which can suspend your license again. Don’t own a car? A non-owner policy can carry the SR-22.
You have a DUI
A DUI raises rates sharply and removes the Good Driver Discount for ten years. Some carriers are far more competitive than others for drivers with a DUI, so comparing several matters more than ever.
Your coverage lapsed
A gap in coverage tells insurers you’re a higher risk, and many charge more for it. Carriers penalize lapses differently, so we look for the ones that weigh it least. The sooner you get covered again, the better.
You had an accident or tickets
At-fault accidents and moving violations typically affect your rate for three years or more. Each carrier counts them differently, which is why the same record can produce very different quotes.
You’re adding a teen or you’re a new driver
Inexperienced drivers cost more to insure. Good student and driver-training discounts help, and some carriers are much more competitive for young drivers than others.
You’ve never had insurance
No insurance history isn’t the same as a bad record, but some carriers still charge more for it. We’ll explain your coverage options and find a starter policy that fits.
Limited income? Check the CLCA program
